2006 Stanley Cup Final Preview

Though the weather outside doesn't make you think about hockey, the Stanley Cup finals start tonight. The match-up must be a complete nightmare for Gary Bettman, the NHL's commissioner. Edmonton hasn't been a marquee team since Wayne Gretzky got traded to Los Angeles, and people don't exactly think of hockey when they hear North Carolina. The TV ratings will be dismal, though that's nothing new for the league. It will, however, be a good series. Both teams have absolutely insane fans that will be out of their minds, and they both play an exciting brand of hockey.

For want of a Goalie

It was thrilling, it was action packed and it was on pace to be a great upset win for the Oilers and give me another win. Then Disaster.. Carolina's Andrew Ladd brought the puck into the Edmonton zone, cut in the front of the net and was hit by Bergeron and that drove Ladd into Roloson and knocked the net off its moorings. Dwayne Roloson went down with a series-ending knee injury. We won't even talk about the play by Ty Conklin.

OLN's Playoff Hockey Coverage Doesn't Make the Cut

Like many hockey fans, I was just happy that hockey was back this year.   I didn't care that ESPN didn't renew their TV contract with the NHL - I figured OLN might have a few hiccups, but overall they would do fine.   I was wrong.   OLN has been a disaster all season long and it's not getting better.

The latest buzz in the sports world is the agreement in the National Hockey League that will bring hockey back to the ice next season after a one-year absence of the sport.   Since the moment I first heard the news, I have been trying hard to care about this return, as have the millions of people worldwide who failed to realize that hockey ever left.   I don't mean to imply that I don't enjoy watching hockey.   Rather, I mean to state it directly: I don't enjoy watching hockey.

Ice Hockey History and the NHL

Even though the history of ice hockey began earlier than 1917, many people say that this was the year when the modern hockey history began.

Ice hockey is played on a large flat area of ice, using a three inch (76.2 mm) diameter vulcanized rubber disc called a puck. This puck is often frozen before high-level games to decrease the amount of bouncing and friction on the ice. The game is contested between two teams of skaters. The game is played all over North America, Europe and in many other countries around the world to varying extent. It is the most popular sport in Canada, Finland, Latvia, the Czech Republic, and in Slovakia.

The governing body of international play is the 66-member International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). Men's ice hockey has been played at the Winter Olympics since 1924, and was in the 1920 Summer Olympics. Women's ice hockey was added to the Winter Olympics in 1998. North America's National Hockey League (NHL) is the strongest professional ice hockey league, drawing top ice hockey players from around the globe. The NHL rules are slightly different from those used in Olympic ice hockey: the periods are 20 minutes long, counting downwards. There are three periods.

Ice hockey sticks are long L-shaped sticks made of wood, graphite, or composites with a blade at the bottom that can lie flat on the playing surface when the stick is held upright and can curve either way, legally, as to help a left- or right-handed player gain an advantage.

There are early representations and reports of ice hockey-type games being played on ice in the Netherlands, and reports from Canada from the beginning of the nineteenth century, but the modern game was initially organized by students at McGill University, Montreal in 1875 who, by two years later, codified the first set of ice hockey rules and organized the first teams.

Ice hockey is played at a number of levels, by all ages.
