Feeling the Chill!

It was a cold and wet December day, when my feet touched the sand at Sendai Shinko. The sand was blanketed white with fresh snow, the sky grey, the waves perfect, and the line up empty. It should have been a perfect setup, the kind of day a surfer dreams of, but I could barely muster up the enthusiasm to strap on my leash. That December day was last year, it's fresh in my mind now as the first snows are starting to fall on the mountains around Sendai.

Billabong Pro Mundaka: If it hadn’t been for the very last day of the waiting period, this year’s edition of the Billabong Pro Mundaka would have been renamed Billabong Pro Bakio. Welcome to Shralp Surf episode 40. Apart from the Semis and the Final, all rounds had to be held at nearby Bakio, unfortunately a rather mediocre beachbreak. If the contest would have been held in pumping Mundaka waves, the general outcome could have been a different, but in the end, the top surfers of the season where the last surfers standing. It was Mick against defending champ Bobby Martinez and Kelly against Taj in the semis. Bobby, on his forehand in rhythm beat Mick in semi number one. Kelly didn’t find any scoring waves in his semi against Taj at all and had to settle for equal third. The final got exciting again after Taj came back with a 9.33, but the ocean went flat for the last few minutes. So it’s Bobby back to back and the title will most probably go down in Brazil. Trilogy: by Billabong and Taylor Steele, Taj, Andy and Parko…These three names simply means: must see. The movie already premiered in the States and Europe and is available in the best surf shops. Billabong Junior Series Final, Bells Beach, Australia: The Billabong Junior Series came to an sensational end at Bells Beach at the beginning of October. Julian Wilson turned on a performance of power and precision as he carved his way to first place, defeating Tim Wrench. Winner of the Series is Mitch Coleburn, Julian Wilson came second, Heath Joske third.

Early History of Surfing

The history of surfing dates back centuries before the first written account of observing the sport of kings in 1779 by Lt. James King in the ship's log of Captain James Cook's Discovery.

More Surfing History

Although surfing was a male-dominated sport, adventurous women surfers can be seen all the way back to the times of the Polynesian Queens. Two notable surfer girls were Eve Fletcher and Anona Napolean. Eve Fletcher was a California-born animator for Walt Disney and Anona Napolean was the daughter of a respected Hawaiian surfing family. The two pioneered the sport for modern women, winning surfing competitions up and down the California coast at the end of the 50s and into the 60s.

They Will Surf Again

Surfing History

Duke Kahanamoku, an Olympic star in swimming, popularized the sport further by traveling internationally and showing off his surfing style to thrilled audiences around the world. He was favored by Hollywood elite- having acted in bit parts in films and was always recruiting new surfers wherever he went. He is credited with surfing the longest wave of all time in 1917, in the popular surfing area now called Outside Castles in Waikiki. His 1000 meters plus wave record has yet to be overtaken.

Surfing: Unaffordable Sport?

Though surfing requires little equipment, the surfboard and the wetsuit can be expensive. The leash and the wax are not really that expensive, especially if you use them carefully and thus don't need to buy extra ones every month. However, affording the purchase of a surfboard and a wetsuit is not for everyone and thus, you'll need to consider your possibilities if you are planning to start practicing this sport.

Trestles, San Mateo Creek: Most Endangered River

The San Mateo Creek was named as one of America's Most Endangered Rivers of 2007. At the center of the last remaining pristine coastal watershed in southern California, San Mateo Creek supports world-class surfing and provides irreplaceable habitat for a variety of fish and wildlife. But a proposed 16-mile long toll road threatens to slice through San Mateo Creek causing significant damage to the watershed and to surfing at the famous Trestles Beach, whose reef depends upon the San Mateo for sand and cobbles. Unless the California Coastal Commission and other state and federal agencies deny permits for this toll road, southern California runs the risk of losing one of its best remaining natural and recreational assets. Surfrider SFL: TV report covering illegal beach closure

The Surfrider Foundation South Florida chapter has been engaged in an effort to raise public awareness regarding an illegal beach closure in Bal Harbour. Surfrider SFL's efforts have brought forward evidence of larger, illegal activities that the chapter is sharing with the general public for the purpose of correcting the beach closure and holding the parties responsible for breaking the law. The following is an investigative report which aired on local Miami television as a result of the chapter's work, which aired on the DeFede Report, CBS4 Miami, hosted by investigative journalist and radio personality, Jim DeFede, in December 2006.

The Surfboard

What was once a ritualistic, spiritual experience for the early Hawaiians and Polynesians in the construction of their surfboards has now become a multi-billion dollar industry with technologically advanced materials, sponsorships and celebrity. The surfboard has gone through as many changes as the culture of surfing progresses. The ancient Hawaiians constructed either Olo (boards reserved for chiefs and royalty) and Alaia (rode by commoners) out of wood from the Ula, Wili Wili or Koa trees. The construction of these boards was ceremonial and utmost respect was given to board makers.

Great Women Surfers

In Polynesian times of the early 1600s, men, women and children would surf the Hawaiian waves together in harmony. Although there were males who were dominant in the sport, many women were also prominent. The Hawaiians looked at the sport in an egalitarian fashion, with equal opportunity for excellence and skill.
